Everything You Need To Know About Purnima

According to Hindu calendar 2017, Purnima is when the full moon occurs. We know that moon revolves around Earth and it takes approximately 29.5 days to do so. During this time the size of moon expands and reduces accordingly. So, when Moon is full in size and glowing away in its glory in the sky, it is known as Purnima. And, similarly when there is no moon day, it is known as Amavasya. In hindu calendar, every month is divided into 2 parts, The Shukla Paksh which is known as the bright fortnight and The Krishna Paksh, which is the dark fortnight. Purnima occurs on the last day of Shukla Paksh.
Purnima is considered to be very auspicious according to hindu traditions. Since, the moon is brightest and illuminating the dark night, it is believed that it drives away all the negative energy and darkness.
